“The Brooklyn-based homies in Liturgy are everything that we could ask for in a metal band. They don’t give a fuck about any black metal aesthetic (but are as melancholic and distraught as one Varg Vikernes), use the most minimal, but powerful drumming imaginable (snare, crash, kick), and create walls-of-sound that are equal parts brutal and psychedelic. Produced by Krallice’s Colin Marston, the bands 20 Buck Spin debut Renihilation rips the shit out of caged metal expectations. “Ecstatic Rite” is just a taste of the band’s “pure transcendental black metal.”

“Liturgy are the first black metal band that truly embodies the ghosts of New York. They play metal like it’s a minimalist downtown art/life/religion project in the tradition of dronemasters Glenn Branca, Rhys Chatham and La Monte Young’s Dream Syndicate. Through their own brand of growling, gnarling, lightning-fast black grind, Liturgy try to find euphoria through dissonance, repetition and volume–turning metal nightmares into something ready for the Dream House. Their debut album for metal label 20 Buck Spin, Renihilation, is due in August. The first leaked track, “Ecstatic Rite” couldn’t be more aptly named–four minutes and 44 seconds of churning blast that aims for the heavens and stretches out when it gets there.”

“Liturgy, from Brooklyn, are billed as yet another in the rapidly growing number of indie rock bands who’ve turned to black metal. And like many of their compatriots, what they lack in corpse paint they make up for in sheer sonic assault. The blast beats are so fast and relentless that the snare drum is verging on metastasizing from percussive white noise into in a continuous sawtooth hum. The buzzing tremolo guitars are similarly fast, and the ferocious diseased vocal growls sound more animal than human. Dissonant, tremolo-picked harmony leads are very cool, as are the occasional droning, relatively soothing interludes between waves of intensity. One such drone, the ninth track, features chanted, quasi-ritualistic vocals, and I can almost picture David Tibet chiming in comfortably at some point if the track were continued a fair bit longer than the brief 2 minutes of air time it’s been given. The seventh track is a complete departure: it consists of unaccompanied electric guitars playing a somewhat bouncy, cheerful riff. Odd. Just makes the ‘Rennilation’ of the following track that much more pronounced. After the aforementioned drone/chant track that soon follows, the album continues unabated. Excellent album.”

“It was a tall order for Liturgy to top LSOD, and the four piece did their best. Drawing heavily from their to-be-lauded LP Renihilation, the band were tight, focused, and muscular. I have seen Liturgy many a time, and it seems that this relatively young band is experienced beyond their years and keep getting better. During their second to last song, guitarist/vocalist Hunter broke a string and instead of having the audience wait until he replaced that string, said “that’s it, sorry guys”. A few in the audience started to trickle out, but screams of “one more” eventually led the band to make a deal: if they could wait until the string was changed and the band would play on. The audience did, and Liturgy did. Sounds like a fair trade to me.”

“Anyone has accustomed the music of Renihilation mp3. It can be heard everywhere – at home, in public transport, while working. Song, completely as love dominates lifetime. It’s true that Renihilation develops miracles. Adults people who almost had never cried, could be touched deeply while listening to classical music or in a temple after the performance of cathedral music. The right song can start a revolution in one’s way of life. Is Renihilation download mp3 great or bad? It’s not a secret that such style of music in a heavy music as “heavy metal” acts oppressive on a listener: such type of music turns a quiet listener into a outraged mood. On the contrary, fascinating melodies of violoncello or harp make one to forget about everything and completely dig into calming world of music. The affection of the mp3-album Renihilation on a human is considerable in many ways of our being. As an example, while serving in the armed forces. It’s obvious music can keep up highly energetic and patriotic mood and favors to a friendly work in a team. Cheerful music adds charm to life in quarter. Before planning a long march a track list compilation program must be made which includes cheerful music so the most of privates would be glad to singing.”

The Cerebral Metalhead Review

“Is cool and – fear many culture, respects a symbol and a transfer – puts a base in this New York and is an image which is suitable for the metal act. Dead of style and firing, hitting and shoots and the dog tree root falls and at their upper direction, again by horrible force swarms the causticity in expansibility territory of the ripple which is healthy and sloughs pilotless plane and the post rock – comes after that, like the comet (with fate undergoing, on the other hand the pioneer,), earthward rushes. Justly, minimalism and the atmosphere metal to the sword is the soldier, the worship deconstructs attacks a style but to clattery poster modernism brutalities. It is coming out and also the stew D five (thousand oysters) brings Krallice stages which last year are excellent and in compliance with scene them who are identical in us. In order to exercise consequently cred the indie and ambition is how? The unit only from opinion of this critic the well. Is Renihilation who and like in me to have Nattens Madrigal, Babelfished it falls and comes,… Gets a comfort hurt with the something else. Is not familiar in this duration of you and in case, Babelfish wants your this in case, from this 1 language of you also again to return after web app – that does to make translate the block of text different one. English goes to English again with from the Korean language test. You to fall and a good condition reinterpretations the phrase which has become frequently true rubber with some and comfort wind, will relax with sound arresting the congestion where you also are many but comfort. It is this album what which comes to feel in like me. Is which side the intelligence which is the tribe of the musical talent which is included is not. In order to withdraw price their oneself who the thorn wire which fights hard comes loose according to long time composition, stretched together at the outside some is noisy, there is a zigzag riff. And under accuracy spastically enthusiastic next, blastbeat beat multiple time was high immediately in notice of moment and to beat a drum, side with changed frequently. Super-high where but, the situation pitches and at tremolo riff which is and the substitution surface respects a mesmerism effect going, but defect [ppek] is making wet from the opinion which hits a player week. Is, gives suitably, a pain and barks long sadly from mixture and anti-vocals where is not buried – – every [e] puts but barely in music and they quite staccato and are rash. And progressive and is protean, composition their oneself also from first until end is a chores will sit. Renihilation sound and rage are strong from the regulation which is living and the thing, goes out but in order again to repeat will worry and positive with the experience which listens does not translate the thing is. Basically, is too pretty the wolf which is in the throne room seeks and puts up, or, as the presence at a sickbed which is too constructed Krallice seeks, will recommend this in the people. In you some in order to be to be big afterwords, in order to be a poster modernism capture which in the black metal is bold and peerless seeks a worship and is good and – thing second degree rock that (thing) will imitate but clumsy dangerously will listen, gets near and seeks.” –Teeth of the Divine

“Are we at the point of acknowledging the genre “hipster black metal”? It seems the American take on BM has been maligned with the dreaded “hipster” put-down. Krallice, Xasthur, Nachtmystium, and Wolves in the Throne room receive derision from the black metaler-than-thou. Does mass acceptance (relatively speaking) of an underground band negate its validity?

“The worst thing any music fan can do is let semantics and internet shit talk get in the way of a great record. Brooklyn’s Liturgy receives praise from the indie rock sect and scorn from some metal quarters. Nevertheless, their debut is a potent and sometimes imaginative interpretation of classic black metal.

“Any band attempting the speed of Transilvanian Hunger had better have a drummer who can blast, and Greg Fox delivers. He operates at superhuman velocities, as if a TR-909 were wired to his heart. His snare and kick patterns are nearly indistinguishable but unbelievably precise. Meanwhile guitarists Hunter Hunt-Hendrix and Bernard Gann incorporate swelling octaves and ringing arpeggios. At their finest, the guitars harmonize into a shimmering wall of dark beauty, as on the title track and “Beyond the Magic Forest.”

“Liturgy adds considerable depth with stop/starts throughout the songs, and intermissions to break up the blitzes. The band’s daring isn’t flawless. A few choral chants come off like cheap Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan knock-offs. The untitled seventh track is a truncated though compelling guitar piece. Had Liturgy developed these experiments into songs, they’d have served a stronger purpose. Despite these missteps, this is a formidable record from a promising band. –Casey Boland
